X-Men '97 Season 2 Delivers Mutant Mayhem Across Time

The wait is over. Marvel Animation’s X-Men '97 is back, and Season 2 has been rewriting the rules of animated superhero storytelling one episode at a time.

Premiering on July 1, 2026, exclusively on Disney+, the nine-episode season kicked off with a three-episode drop and has been releasing new installments every Wednesday. Today, August 12, marks the arrival of the finale, “Survival of the Fittest.”

From Cliffhanger to Time-Spanning Epic

Season 1 ended in 2024 with the X-Men scattered across different eras after a devastating confrontation. Season 2 picks up that thread with precision. One group, including Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler, lands in ancient Egypt and encounters a young En Sabah Nur, the mutant who will become Apocalypse. Another group, featuring Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, and Morph, faces the height of Apocalypse’s reign in the distant future.

The result is a story that feels both faithful to the spirit of the original 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series and fully modern in its ambition. Original series veterans Eric Lewald, Julia Lewald, and Larry Houston returned as executive producers, bringing deep knowledge of the characters and the era.

Why This Season Hits Differently

Critics and fans have praised the animation, the voice performances, and the emotional stakes. Returning talent includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast. New and expanded roles for characters like Polaris, Cable, and others have expanded the mutant roster without losing the core team dynamic.

The series continues to treat its audience with respect. It balances large-scale action with character-driven drama, exactly what made the original animated series a cultural touchstone. Early episodes earned strong reviews, with some outlets calling the first half of Season 2 a clear high point for Marvel Animation.

The Road Ahead Is Already Mapped

Marvel has confirmed that Season 3 is complete and will arrive in 2027. Season 4 is already in production, with the studio aiming for yearly releases going forward. At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum and the creative team teased the return of classic villains and new story directions, signaling that the mutant saga is only getting bigger.

If you have not started Season 2 yet, the full run is available on Disney+. The official trailer still holds up as a perfect entry point.
