Wix Announces 20% Workforce Reduction Amid AI Shift and Currency Strain

On May 28, 2026, website building giant Wix confirmed a significant corporate restructuring. The company is laying off approximately 1,000 employees, which accounts for 20 percent of its global workforce. CEO Avishai Abrahami announced the decision publicly, citing two primary drivers: the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and severe macroeconomic pressures stemming from the strengthening Israeli shekel. This marks the largest single layoff event in the company's history.

A major factor in this decision is a structural currency mismatch. Wix collects the vast majority of its revenue in US dollars. However, with over 60 percent of its staff based in Israel, a massive portion of its operational costs is paid in shekels. The Israeli shekel appreciated by roughly 14 percent against the dollar in 2025 and climbed another 7 percent in the first five months of 2026. This dynamic has severely inflated the company's cost base in a way that product growth alone cannot easily offset.

Beyond financial pressures, the layoffs reflect a fundamental shift in business strategy. Abrahami described the current AI revolution as the most profound change in software development since the 1970s. Wix is streamlining its hierarchy to remove management layers and accelerate decision-making. Simultaneously, the company is introducing AI-native roles, such as "xEngineer" and "Creators." These new positions signal a pivot toward automated workflows and a leaner organizational structure.

Wix is not alone in this transition. Major tech firms like Meta, Cisco, and Intuit have recently announced similar workforce reductions, bringing the total number of US tech jobs lost in 2026 to over 134,000. These companies are reorganizing around AI, replacing manual roles in content creation, customer support, and basic coding with automated systems. While exact details on the specific severance payouts for all affected Wix employees remain private, leadership confirmed that departing staff will receive curated separation packages and individual consultations.
