Verity Lands in Theaters: Hoover’s Thriller Meets Hathaway, Hartnett, and Johnson

Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller has moved from nightstand staple to big-screen event. On October 2, 2026, Amazon MGM Studios released Verity, the film adaptation of the 2018 novel, directed by Michael Showalter. Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett, and Dakota Johnson lead a cast built around secrets, attraction, and an unfinished manuscript that refuses to stay hidden.

From Self-Published Sensation to Screen

Hoover first released Verity independently on December 7, 2018. Grand Central Publishing later issued a wider edition. The story follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, hired by Jeremy Crawford to finish the remaining books in his wife Verity Crawford’s bestselling series after a mysterious accident leaves Verity unable to continue. Inside the family home, Lowen finds a manuscript Verity never meant anyone to read.

The book spent extended time on the New York Times bestseller list and sold more than one million copies in 2023 alone, according to contemporary industry reporting. Readers treated the twist-heavy plot as appointment reading long before cameras rolled.

The Cast That Carries the Confession

Anne Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, the celebrated author whose silence drives the story. Josh Hartnett portrays her husband Jeremy, the man who brings Lowen into the house. Dakota Johnson steps in as Lowen Ashleigh, the writer caught between a lucrative assignment and unsettling pages. Ismael Cruz Córdova appears as Corey, and Brady Wagner plays the couple’s son Crew. Irina Dvorovenko is credited as Anna.

Showalter, who previously directed Hathaway in The Idea of You, reteamed with her here. Nick Antosca wrote the screenplay. Principal photography began in February 2025, with New York locations used for key scenes. The finished film runs 117 minutes and carries an R rating. Amazon MGM Studios handled the North American release; Sony Pictures Releasing International managed territories outside the United States and Canada. A world premiere took place at London’s Curzon Mayfair on September 24, 2026.

Early reviews landed in mixed territory. Rotten Tomatoes showed 44 percent positive from 62 critics, while Metacritic sat at 43 out of 100 based on 23 reviews. Critics noted strong performances and the film’s willingness to lean into erotic-thriller tension, alongside reservations about pacing and the density of its twists. Hartnett has described the role as one that resists easy answers about who holds the advantage.

The adaptation arrives on the same day many readers first discovered the novel through word of mouth. Whether the manuscript on screen feels as destabilizing as the one on the page is now a question audiences can settle for themselves.
