Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Drama About Second Chances

Doing Life: Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Drama About Second Chances

Tyler Perry’s latest film is already streaming, and it leans hard into a familiar tension: what happens when survival and romance collide. Tyler Perry’s Doing Life arrived on Netflix on October 2, 2026. Perry wrote, directed, and produced it, with Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland also credited as producers.

The official premise is direct. A single mother and an incarcerated man forge an unlikely bond through heartfelt letters, unlocking a door to redemption, hope, and love against all odds. Naomi Baker plays Anika. Jay Reeves plays Carousel. The supporting cast includes Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Jasmine Sargent, Danielle Moné Truitt, and Lucky Johnson.

The Story Netflix Is Selling

Netflix describes the film as a gritty urban drama about a single mother fighting for survival and a reformed ex-con with untapped talents who form an unexpected bond. Reporting on the film adds more specific beats. Anika, a pregnant correctional staff member, is rescued during a prison riot by Carousel. Months later, after she has her baby, the two begin a correspondence. Carousel later leaves prison, and the relationship has to survive family skepticism and the weight of his past.

The New York Times review notes a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes and frames the film as a romance built on that rescue and the letters that follow. IMDb lists the same runtime and a TV-MA rating. Early audience scores are still forming. IMDb showed a 5.4 average from a small number of ratings in the first days of release, so that number is provisional.

Why the Title Lands

The phrase “doing life” does double work here. In the trailer, a family member warns Anika about deadbeat men and says she is already “doing life as a single mother.” Carousel’s history is the other half of that line. Netflix’s trailer description says he was incarcerated for attempted murder after joining a gang at 14, and that he insists he learned his lesson.

Perry has also tied the film to earlier Black romance dramas. On October 3, 2026, TheGrio reported that Perry posted on Instagram calling Doing Life an homage to Jason’s Lyric (1994) and Love Jones (1997), and to the feeling those films left with him. That is a public statement from the filmmaker, not a plot summary.

What to Watch Before You Press Play

The official trailer is the cleanest way in. It sets up the letters, the family resistance, and the question of whether a man with a violent past can be trusted with a second chance.

If you have already seen it, the useful conversation is not whether Perry made another melodrama. It is whether the letters, the rescue, and the family pushback feel earned.
