Tim Curry spent a lifetime proving that the most unforgettable characters do not hide in the middle of the road. They arrive in corsets, clown paint, hooves, or a butler’s tailcoat, and they stay with you. The English actor, singer, and voice artist died in Los Angeles in August 2026 at the age of 80. His manager and longtime friend Marcia Hurwitz confirmed the news. A cause of death has not been publicly announced.
If you have ever shouted back at a midnight screening, flinched at a sewer clown, or smiled at Nigel Thornberry’s wild whoop, you already know why his work still sparks conversation. Timothy James Curry was born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire. His father, James Curry, was a Methodist chaplain in the Royal Navy. His mother, Maura Patricia, worked as a school secretary. After his father died when Tim was a boy, the family settled in South London.
He studied drama and English at the University of Birmingham. His first professional job came in 1968 in the original London production of Hair. He later said he claimed more experience than he had. The producers kept him anyway and helped him join the union. That gamble put him in the same orbit as Richard O’Brien, who would soon write the role that changed both of their lives.
In 1973 Curry originated Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs. He carried the part to Los Angeles and Broadway, then into Jim Sharman’s 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, opposite Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. The movie opened quietly. Midnight audiences turned it into the longest-running theatrical release in film history.
Curry never treated Frank-N-Furter as a costume he could not take off. He moved on, on purpose. Stage work brought Tony nominations for Amadeus (Mozart), My Favorite Year, and Spamalot (King Arthur). On screen he played Rooster Hannigan in Annie (1982), Wadsworth in Clue (1985), Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985), Pennywise in the 1990 ABC miniseries of Stephen King’s It, and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island (1996).

Voice work became another signature. He won a Daytime Emmy in 1991 as Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates. He also voiced Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys and Hexxus in FernGully: The Last Rainforest. He released three studio albums on A&M: Read My Lips (1978), Fearless (1979), and Simplicity (1981).

In July 2012 Curry suffered a major stroke that left him using a wheelchair. He later said he had to relearn how to speak and that mobility on his left side never fully returned. He kept working, mostly in voice roles, appeared as the Criminologist in Fox’s 2016 Rocky Horror television remake, published the memoir Vagabond in 2025, and joined 50th-anniversary events for the film he helped launch. He never married and had no children.

What endures is not only the fishnets or the balloon. It is the nerve to play big without apology, then walk away and play something else. That is why people still dress up, still quote him, and still argue over which villain was best.
