Tiafoe vs Michelsen: An All-American Quarterfinal Takes Over the US Open

Flushing Meadows has its matchup of the night. On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, No. 11 seed Frances Tiafoe and unseeded Alex Michelsen meet in the men’s singles quarterfinals at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It is an American derby with two very different paths into the last eight, and a guaranteed U.S. semifinalist on the other side.

Two Americans, Two Very Different Roads

Tiafoe arrived as the established New York performer. The 28-year-old from Hyattsville, Maryland, is 6-foot-2, turned professional in 2015, and reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 on June 19, 2023. He holds four ATP singles titles and more than $18.7 million in career prize money. At this US Open he beat Rei Sakamoto, Valentin Vacherot, and then No. 7 Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) to reach another quarterfinal in New York.

Michelsen is the breakout. Born August 25, 2004, in Southern California, the 6-foot-4 right-hander turned pro in 2023 after leaving the University of Georgia. His career-high ranking is No. 30, set on July 14, 2025. He entered this fortnight ranked No. 46 and unseeded. Then he won four matches without dropping a set: Federico Cina, Daniel Merida, No. 16 Brandon Nakashima, and No. 27 Tomás Martín Etcheverry, 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4. It is his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

What the Head-to-Head Actually Says

They have met twice on the ATP Tour. Tiafoe leads 2-0 and has not lost a set.

  • Dallas Open, February 2024, indoor hard, second round: Tiafoe won 6-4, 6-3.
  • U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, April 2025, quarterfinals: Tiafoe won 7-5, 6-1.

Those results are confirmed across official match records. They do not decide Tuesday. This is their first meeting at a major, and their first on outdoor hard courts at Flushing Meadows.

Live reports from the quarterfinal showed Michelsen taking the opening set 7-5. The match was still in progress at the time of this writing, so the final score is not confirmed here.

The contrast is sharp. Tiafoe has already been a US Open semifinalist in 2022 and 2024. Michelsen had never reached the second week of a Slam more than once before this run. One player knows the Ashe night-session noise. The other has treated this tournament like a statement.

The winner is scheduled to face either Carlos Alcaraz or Ben Shelton in the semifinals. That is the confirmed half of the draw. American men’s tennis has a real stake in both quarterfinals.
