Orange County residents woke up to an unprecedented industrial emergency this weekend as a compromised chemical tank at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove continues to pose serious risks. Authorities have evacuated approximately 40,000 to 50,000 people, with no timetable yet for their return.
The incident began on May 21 when a 34,000-gallon storage tank containing methyl methacrylate (MMA) — a toxic and flammable chemical used in plastics manufacturing — started venting vapors after overheating. Fire crews have been working nonstop to cool the tank, but internal temperatures have remained unstable.
Officials quickly established and later expanded mandatory evacuation orders covering parts of Garden Grove, Stanton, Cypress, Buena Park, Anaheim, and Westminster. The zone now stretches from Valley View Street on the west to Dale Street on the east, Ball Road to the north, and Trask Avenue to the south.

Residents were urged to leave immediately, with shelters opening across the region. Many facilities are nearing capacity as families seek safety.
Methyl methacrylate is highly volatile. Officials warn the tank could either rupture and spill thousands of gallons of the substance or experience thermal runaway leading to an explosion. Firefighters continue spraying water to stabilize temperatures, which had been rising about one degree per hour at one point.
No injuries have been reported so far, and air quality monitoring in surrounding areas shows no immediate widespread threats beyond the evacuation zone.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on May 23 to support response efforts and provide resources for displaced residents.
This crisis has disrupted daily life for thousands, closing schools and forcing businesses to shutter temporarily. First responders from the Orange County Fire Authority remain on scene, working alongside hazmat teams.
Local officials emphasize that those outside the designated zone face minimal risk, but caution remains high.
