Peter Cullen, the Canadian voice actor who gave Optimus Prime his calm authority for more than 40 years, has died. He was 85.
His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed that Cullen died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. A cause of death has not been publicly announced. His family said he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, and asked fans to remember a line that became his credo: be strong enough to be gentle.
That sentence is not a slogan invented for a press release. It is the origin story of the voice.
Cullen was born Peter Claver Cullen in Montreal on July 28, 1941. He trained at the National Theatre School of Canada, worked radio and television, and later became a prolific Hollywood voice actor. Then, in 1984, he auditioned for a talking truck.
The character was Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots in the syndicated cartoon The Transformers. Cullen later said he modeled the performance on his older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine Corps captain who had served in Vietnam. Larry’s advice, as Cullen told it at conventions for years, was simple: if you play a hero, play a real one. Do not yell. Do not posture. Be strong enough to be gentle.

That choice is why the voice stuck. Optimus did not sound like a Saturday-morning bully. He sounded like someone who had already paid a price for command.
Cullen voiced Prime through the original series and the 1986 animated feature The Transformers: The Movie, in which the character’s on-screen death stunned young viewers and helped force a return. He later brought the same voice to Michael Bay’s live-action films beginning in 2007, then to Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight, Bumblebee, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
He also played Optimus in series such as Transformers: Prime and Transformers: Robots in Disguise, plus games tied to the franchise. In 2011 he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Transformers: Prime. In 2023 he received a lifetime achievement honor at the Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.
Chris Hemsworth later voiced a younger Optimus in the 2024 animated film Transformers One. Cullen’s version remained the one most fans still hear when they think of the character.

Prime was not his only famous role. Cullen voiced Eeyore across multiple Winnie the Pooh projects and contributed creature vocalizations to films including the 1976 King Kong remake and 1987’s Predator. He was also the original voice of KARR on Knight Rider. Optimus, he said more than once, was the favorite.
Hear him tell the story of the voice in his own words: Peter Cullen explains how he created the voice for Optimus Prime.
Major outlets including AP, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Deadline, the Los Angeles Times, and CBC reported the same core facts: Cullen died at 85 in Los Angeles, his agent confirmed it, and no official cause has been released. His family asked the public to honor him by serving communities with compassion, integrity, and loyalty.
That is a high bar. It is also the reason the performance lasted. Toys change. Continuity reboots. Directors come and go. The voice stayed.
