Ted Kaczynski the Unabomber Movie

Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber Movie, and the Netflix Cast Explained

The name still lands with force. Ted Kaczynski, known to the public as the Unabomber, spent 17 years sending or planting homemade bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others. Now a new Netflix drama is putting that history back on screen, and viewers are asking the same questions at once: who was he, what did the film change, and who is in the cast?

If this case, the manhunt, or the new movie is on your mind, drop a comment with the version you watched first. Like this piece if you want more true-crime breakdowns, and subscribe so you do not miss the next one.

Who Ted Kaczynski Was

Theodore John Kaczynski was born on May 22, 1942, in the Chicago area. He entered Harvard University at 16, earned a mathematics degree in 1962, completed a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 1967, and then taught as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He left academia and, in 1971, moved to a small cabin he built near Lincoln, Montana, without electricity or running water.

From 1978 to 1995 he carried out a nationwide bombing campaign that the FBI coded UNABOM, for university and airline bombing. Investigators later tied him to 16 bombs. The three people killed were computer store owner Hugh Scrutton in 1985, advertising executive Thomas Mosser in 1994, and timber-industry lobbyist Gilbert Murray in 1995.

In 1995, a writer identifying the group as “FC” offered to stop the bombings if a major newspaper published a long anti-technology essay titled “Industrial Society and Its Future.” After consulting with federal authorities, The New York Times and The Washington Post published the manifesto that September. Kaczynski’s brother, David Kaczynski, recognized the writing and contacted investigators. FBI agents arrested Ted Kaczynski at the Montana cabin on April 3, 1996. Inside they found bomb components, tens of thousands of journal pages, and a live bomb ready for mailing.

He pleaded guilty in 1998 and was sentenced to four life terms plus 30 years. He died on June 10, 2023, at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, at age 81. Multiple news organizations later reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that he died by suicide.

Netflix Movie, Earlier Series, and Cast

Netflix’s feature film Unabomber, directed by Janus Metz, began streaming on September 25, 2026. Official materials describe it as inspired by true events. The story cuts between Kaczynski’s years at Harvard and the later FBI hunt. As an undergraduate, Kaczynski did take part in psychologically intense research run by Harvard psychologist Henry A. Murray. The film uses that chapter as a dramatic spine. It does not replace the public record of the bombings, the manifesto, or the arrest.

The confirmed principal cast includes:

  • Jacob Tremblay as young Ted Kaczynski
  • Russell Crowe as Professor Henry Murray
  • Shailene Woodley as FBI agent Joanne Miller, a fictional character created for the film
  • Annabelle Wallis as Christiana Morgan
  • Alexander Ludwig, Steven Ogg, and Marc Menchaca in supporting roles

Some coverage also lists Michael Laurence as the older Kaczynski during the manhunt timeline. Netflix and review sites have identified the film as an R-rated crime drama running about 100 minutes. Early critic response has been mixed.

This is not Netflix’s first Unabomber title. The streamer has also carried Unabomber: In His Own Words, a documentary series anchored by Kaczynski’s own recorded comments, and it previously offered Manhunt: Unabomber in various territories. That 2017 Discovery miniseries starred Paul Bettany as Kaczynski and Sam Worthington as FBI profiler James “Fitz” Fitzgerald. Bettany’s performance remains one of the most widely discussed screen versions of the case.

The new movie is a dramatization. Joanne Miller is not a historical investigator from the UNABOM Task Force. The real break in the case came from the published manifesto and David Kaczynski’s tip, not from a single invented agent. That distinction matters if you are watching for history rather than atmosphere.
