Ryan Gosling Rides into the MCU as Ghost Rider with Shawn Levy at the Helm

Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 delivered one of the biggest surprises of the weekend. Marvel Studios officially confirmed that Ryan Gosling will star as Ghost Rider in a new standalone film directed by Shawn Levy. The project is set for a 2028 theatrical release.

Gosling stepped onto the stage to roaring applause after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the project. “Wow, is this really happening?” Gosling told the crowd. “As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time.”

The Perfect Partnership

Gosling made clear there was only one filmmaker he wanted for the job. He welcomed Shawn Levy to the stage, the same director currently collaborating with him on Star Wars: Starfighter (due May 28, 2027). Levy previously delivered Marvel’s highest-grossing R-rated film with Deadpool & Wolverine.

Levy explained that the idea took shape during downtime on the Starfighter set. “As Ryan started talking about his vision for this character, we started riffing,” he said. “And I finally said, ‘Bro, let’s ride.’ So guys, we’ll see you in 2028.”

The official logo for the film was also revealed during the panel, featuring bold, flame-licked lettering that instantly signals the Spirit of Vengeance is back.

Why This Casting Feels Right

Gosling has spoken publicly about his desire to play Ghost Rider for years. The character, most famously known as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze who becomes bound to the Spirit of Vengeance, first hit screens in Nicolas Cage’s 2007 film and its 2011 sequel. Gabriel Luna later portrayed the Robbie Reyes version on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel has not yet confirmed which incarnation Gosling will portray, though the classic Johnny Blaze version remains the most widely expected. What is certain is the creative chemistry already proven between Gosling and Levy. Their upcoming Starfighter collaboration appears to have built the exact trust needed for a character this wild and supernatural.

What Comes Next

No additional cast members, plot details, or exact release date within 2028 have been shared. The film marks Gosling’s first major superhero role and Levy’s second directorial outing inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans can expect more updates as production ramps up after Starfighter lands in theaters next year.
