Madonna Opens the 2026 MTV VMAs: Exact Start Time and Every Way to Watch

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and the night is built for appointment viewing. Madonna opens the show for the first time in 23 years. Snoop Dogg hosts. Taylor Swift receives the inaugural Artist Director Honors. If you have been searching where to watch the VMAs, what time the VMAs start, or how to stream MTV’s biggest night, here is the confirmed guide.

What time do the 2026 VMAs start?

CBS and MTV scheduled the two hour ceremony for Sunday, September 27, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET, which is 6:30 p.m. CT and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT.

That timing shifts by region. In the United Kingdom the live window begins at 12:30 a.m. BST on Monday, September 28. In India the start is 5:00 a.m. IST on September 28. In eastern Australia the main show lands at 9:30 a.m. AEST on September 28.

One confirmed wrinkle: the CBS simulcast was pushed back on air because the network was still carrying the Baltimore Ravens versus Dallas Cowboys NFL game from Rio de Janeiro. The live event at the Peacock Theater still began on schedule. If your CBS feed looks late, check MTV or Paramount+ Premium, then stay with CBS once football clears.

Where to watch the VMAs live

You do not need an old school MTV-only cable package.

  • CBS and MTV: live simulcast in the United States
  • Paramount+ Premium: live stream in the U.S., plus on demand
  • Paramount+ Essential: on demand beginning Monday, September 28
  • Live TV apps: YouTube TV, DirecTV, Sling, and similar services that carry CBS or MTV
  • Outside the U.S.: Paramount+ and MTV have confirmed global availability the day after the broadcast

Official tune in pages include CBS’s VMAs hub and MTV’s schedule listings. Red carpet arrivals were also carried live by outlets such as AP Entertainment on YouTube.

Why Madonna is the center of this year’s show

CBS and MTV confirmed Madonna as the opener, her first live VMAs performance since 2003, when she shared the stage with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Billboard reports this is her fifth time opening the telecast, a show record.

She arrives off Confessions II, her No. 1 Warner Records album, and the short film Confessions II The Film, directed by TORSO. Official Paramount materials listed a career high 11 nominations, including Video of the Year for the film, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter. Later tallies that add social categories have put her as high as 13. Either way, she leads the field. She entered the night with 19 competitive VMA wins.

Who else is on the bill

Snoop Dogg, a 13 time nominee and three time winner, is hosting for the first time. Confirmed performers include LISA with the TV debut of “SaWaDiKa,” RAYE, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey and Gunna with “Cowgirl,” and GENER8ION with Yung Lean on “Storm II.”

Two tributes are locked in. Kacey Musgraves honors Dolly Parton. RAYE, Sombr, and Teddy Swims honor George Michael. Nirvana receives the Video Vanguard Award. Taylor Swift receives the first Artist Director Honors and premieres the “Patient Zero” video during the show.
