Lord of the Rings: War in the North Returns With Legacy Edition

The North of Middle-earth has long waited for its moment in the spotlight. On August 11, 2026, that moment arrived with the surprise launch of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition. Aspyr Media brought the 2011 action RPG back to modern platforms, giving both longtime fans and new players a chance to defend the northern lands while the main Fellowship heads south.

A Parallel Tale of the War of the Ring

Developed originally by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, War in the North released on November 1, 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. A Mac version followed in 2013 from Feral Interactive. The game does not retell the central story of Frodo and the Ring. Instead it runs parallel to those events, focusing on the lesser-documented conflicts across Eriador and Rhovanion.

Players control a custom fellowship of three heroes: Eradan, a Dúnadan Ranger skilled in stealth and ranged combat; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster from Rivendell who provides magical support and healing; and Farin, a Dwarven Champion from Erebor built for heavy melee and durability. The trio works together against Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean lieutenant of Sauron who gathers orc armies in the ruins of Fornost to threaten the North.

The story opens in Bree at the Prancing Pony, where the heroes report to Aragorn about a Nazgûl attack at Sarn Ford. From there the campaign moves through locations such as Fornost, the Barrow-downs, Rivendell, the Ettenmoors, Mount Gundabad, and original sites drawn from Tolkien’s wider legendarium. Familiar faces including Gandalf, Elrond, and Radagast appear, while the heroes also call on the Great Eagle Beleram for aerial support.

Co-op Combat and Modern Updates

At its core the game is a third-person action RPG with hack-and-slash combat. Players can switch between the three characters freely, upgrading skills, weapons, and armor as they progress. The original design emphasized three-player co-op, with AI companions filling empty slots. The Legacy Edition expands this with online co-op for up to three players, local split-screen for two, improved character hot-swapping, refined targeting, updated UI elements, autosave, gyro support on certain platforms, and 60 FPS performance on modern hardware.

The Legacy Edition launched simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. It is priced at $19.99 with a short launch discount. Aspyr handled the port and updates while preserving the original experience developed by Snowblind Studios, which closed in 2012.

The original title earned mixed reviews upon release, with praise for its atmospheric Middle-earth setting and co-op potential tempered by criticism of repetitive combat and AI limitations. Its return now gives the game a second life on current hardware with quality-of-life improvements that address some of those earlier shortcomings.
