Kit Harington Steps In as Gilderoy Lockhart for Harry Potter Season 2

The wizarding world just got a major cast shake-up. Kit Harington is officially taking on the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, replacing Nicholas Hoult for season 2.

A Familiar Face Returns to Hogwarts

Harington, best known for his Emmy-nominated turn as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, will portray the vain, fame-obsessed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor starting in the series’ second season. That season adapts J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The casting marks a seamless transition for the actor. Harington previously voiced Lockhart in Audible’s full-cast audio editions of the books, released in 2025. He has openly described the character as one of his favorites and a “no-brainer” to play.

Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. Season 2 begins filming this fall. Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton star as Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Returning cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall.

Why the Change Happened

Nicholas Hoult had been announced for the role earlier in August 2026. He exited due to scheduling conflicts with other projects, including work on the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. HBO confirmed the recast, and the official Harry Potter Instagram account noted the adjustment “due to schedule.”

Lockhart, originally played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film, is a celebrity author whose heroic claims prove fraudulent. The character’s mix of charm and incompetence has long made him a fan favorite, and Harington’s prior voice work positions him well for the live-action version.
