Kavinsky, the French Touch Icon Behind “Nightcall,” Dies at 50

The electronic music world is mourning Vincent Belorgey, better known as Kavinsky. The French DJ, producer, and actor was found dead at his Paris home on July 28, 2026. He was 50 years old. Authorities opened an inquiry, noting no suspicious elements at the scene. Reports indicated he had complained of headaches in the days prior, with a suspected stroke under consideration.

Belorgey leaves behind a lean but unforgettable body of work that helped define the modern synthwave sound and gave one of cinema’s most stylish openings its pulse.

The Zombie Behind the Decks

Born Vincent Pierre Claude Belorgey on July 31, 1975, in Seine-Saint-Denis, France, he first explored acting, appearing in projects by friend Quentin Dupieux (Mr. Oizo). Music followed after Dupieux handed him a discarded Apple computer loaded with production software. Belorgey built a fictional persona: Kavinsky, a young man who crashed a Ferrari Testarossa in 1986 and returned as a red-eyed undead producer.

Early releases such as the Teddy Boy EP (2006) and 1986 EP (2007) placed him in the second wave of French Touch alongside Justice and SebastiAn. He opened for Daft Punk and crafted driving, neon-soaked tracks inspired by 1980s film soundtracks, video games, and sports cars.

Nightcall and the Drive Phenomenon

In 2010 Kavinsky released “Nightcall,” co-produced with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, mixed by SebastiAn, and featuring vocals from CSS singer Lovefoxxx. The track found its perfect home a year later when Nicolas Winding Refn placed it over the opening credits of Drive, starring Ryan Gosling.

The pairing of sleek visuals, minimal dialogue, and that prowling synth line turned “Nightcall” into a cultural landmark. It became a French Top 10 hit, earned diamond certification in France, and later racked up hundreds of millions of streams. A 2024 reworking with Phoenix and Angèle, performed at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, briefly became the most Shazamed song in a single day.

From OutRun to Reborn

Kavinsky’s debut album OutRun arrived in 2013 and reached number two on the French charts. After a quieter period he returned with Reborn in 2022. Collaborations stretched from The Weeknd on a version of “Odd Look” to live appearances that kept the red-eyed myth alive on stages worldwide.

French President Emmanuel Macron called him “a source of French pride forever.” Tributes also came from The Weeknd, David Guetta, and Culture Minister Catherine Pégard, who described him as one of France’s most singular voices.

Kavinsky’s music was built for night drives, neon lights, and the space between nostalgia and the future. That space feels a little emptier today.
