Is David Jonsson the Next Black Panther? The Rising Star Fueling MCU Buzz

David Jonsson has gone from East London stages to Hollywood screens at lightning speed. Now, the BAFTA Rising Star winner sits at the center of one of the biggest casting conversations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans cannot stop talking about whether the Alien: Romulus breakout could step into Wakanda’s next chapter.

Who Is David Jonsson?

Born on 4 September 1993 in London, David Jonsson grew up in Custom House in the East London Docklands. His father worked as an IT engineer at Heathrow Airport and his mother served with the Metropolitan Police. The youngest of four siblings, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2016.

Jonsson first turned heads on the West End, then broke through on television as Augustus “Gus” Sackey in the BBC and HBO series Industry (2020–2022). His film roles quickly followed: the charming Dom in the 2023 rom-com Rye Lane, the synthetic Andy in Alien: Romulus (2024), Pete McVries in the 2025 Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, and the lead in the prison drama Wasteman (2025). In 2025 he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award, cementing his status as one of Britain’s most exciting young actors.

The Black Panther Rumors and Ryan Coogler’s Next Chapter

In August 2025, industry insider Jeff Sneider reported that Marvel Studios “knows who they want” for the next T’Challa and named David Jonsson as a leading candidate. Some reports suggested the role could involve Toussaint, T’Challa’s son introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, rather than a direct recast of Chadwick Boseman’s iconic character. Earlier speculation around Damson Idris had cooled, according to the same sources.

Marvel has not confirmed any casting. Director Ryan Coogler, who is returning to write and direct Black Panther 3 (his next film after Sinners), has previously called the idea of recasting T’Challa complicated. Coogler has confirmed he is writing a role for Denzel Washington, and the film remains in active development with no official release date announced.

Jonsson has addressed the rumors with characteristic grace. In a 2025 interview with Josh Horowitz, he spoke of deep respect for Chadwick Boseman “on and off the screen” and simply said he loves making movies. No deal has been reported.
