Erling Haaland just said goodbye to one of the most recognizable looks in world football. The Manchester City striker traded his signature long blonde hair for a sharp military-style buzz cut, unveiling the change on social media hours before the Premier League season opener against Bournemouth on August 23, 2026.
The transformation went viral almost instantly. Haaland posted “New season, new trim” alongside a video and follow-up photos captioned “Short hair don’t care.” Fans, teammates, and legends reacted with a mix of shock, laughter, and approval.
In a YouTube vlog documenting the haircut, Haaland explained the timing. He had considered cutting his hair right after the 2026 World Cup but waited until the new club season. “This beautiful blonde hair, time to let it go,” he said. “The season starts now, so it’s time to get a fresh start.”
He also referenced advice from Zlatan Ibrahimović, who had once told him never to cut his hair because “your strength is in the hair.” Haaland admitted he felt nervous but still went for the short style, joking that he wanted a look “like I’ve been in the military.” He even referenced Viking history, noting that “the Vikings, they go short as well.”

Haaland wasted no time testing the new look on friends. In the same video he FaceTimed Jack Grealish, who told him he looked “about 10 years old.” Noel Gallagher said he looked “about 17” and added that “change is good.” Former City manager Pep Guardiola replied, “You’re lucky to have hair. I would love to have it!”
Zlatan Ibrahimović’s reaction stole the show. “What did you do? You lost a bet or what? Block me and erase my number,” the Swedish legend said. Haaland’s girlfriend Isabel Haugseng Johansen was also in the room and initially said she thought she might cry.
The new cut made its official debut during the warm-up at the Etihad Stadium. Haaland arrived wearing a cap but removed it for the session, giving fans their first live look at the shorter style. Manchester City went on to win 2-1, though Haaland missed a couple of clear chances.

The long hair had become part of Haaland’s brand during Norway’s impressive World Cup run and throughout his time at City. Shedding it marks a clear visual reset as he begins a new campaign under a different managerial setup.
