In a world still healing from dragons and conquests, a new kind of hero emerges. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO's latest entry into the Game of Thrones universe, delivers an intimate, character-driven adventure based directly on George R.R. Martin's beloved Dunk and Egg novellas.

The Tale That Started It All

The series adapts Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg," beginning with The Hedge Knight. Set approximately 90 years before the events of A Game of Thrones, it follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a lowborn hedge knight of towering stature and humble origins, and his clever young squire, Aegon "Egg" Targaryen. Their story unfolds through tournaments, trials, and the everyday grit of Westerosi life.

The show premiered on January 18, 2026, on HBO and Max, with its first season of six episodes covering the core of the first novella. New episodes dropped weekly, wrapping the season on February 22, 2026. It has already been renewed for a second season focusing on The Sworn Sword.

Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall, bringing physical presence and earnest charm to the role. The former rugby player embodies the honorable yet unpolished knight perfectly. Young Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg, capturing the boy's sharp wit and hidden royal identity with impressive maturity.

Why This Story Hits Different

Unlike the grand political machinations and dragonfire of previous series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms focuses on friendship, honor, and personal growth. Dunk's journey from wandering fighter to legendary figure offers a refreshing, more grounded look at the Seven Kingdoms during the reign of the Targaryens, when dragons were memory but tensions still simmered.

Fans praise the show's lighter tone mixed with heartfelt drama, stunning tournament sequences, and the electric chemistry between its leads.

The cast rounds out with strong supporting turns, including Finn Bennett as the volatile Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as the noble Prince Baelor, and others bringing Martin's colorful characters to vivid life.
