Did Lionel Messi Retire?

Did Lionel Messi Retire? The Answer, and What It Means

The search terms exploded on Monday: did Messi retire, is Messi retiring, messi retirement. The short answer is precise. Lionel Messi has retired from international football with Argentina. He has not retired from club football.

On 31 August 2026, the 39-year-old posted a handwritten note on Instagram. He wrote that he drafted it on 21 July, two days after Argentina lost the 2026 World Cup final. The death of his father, Jorge Messi, on 8 August, he said, made him “even more convinced than before.”

What Messi actually announced

Messi is stepping away from the Argentina national team after 207 appearances and 125 goals, both national records. His last match in the albiceleste shirt was the World Cup final on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

He is still an Inter Miami player. His MLS contract runs through the 2028 season. Days before the announcement he scored four goals in a 7-1 win over CF Montréal.

That distinction matters. “Did Messi retire?” is the wrong question if it treats the whole career as finished. The international chapter is closed. The club chapter is not.

Who won the 2026 World Cup?

Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time. Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute. Attendance was 80,663. It was Spain’s second world title, after 2010, and the first time a nation held both the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at once.

Argentina, the defending champion from Qatar 2022, reached a second straight final. Messi appeared in a record 34 World Cup matches across six tournaments and finished the 2026 edition with 21 career World Cup goals. France’s Kylian Mbappé later moved ahead of that mark in the same tournament.

The career that closed in sky blue and white

Messi won his first senior cap in August 2005. He captained Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima. He also reached World Cup finals in 2014 and 2026, becoming only the second player after Brazil’s Cafu to appear in three men’s World Cup finals.

He is a record eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. He turns 40 in June 2027.

The statement was spare and final. He said he had given everything to the shirt, that he had nothing left to give, and that younger players deserve the space. He thanked supporters and said he would always love being part of the national team.

So is this the end of Messi?

No, not if the question is whether he has stopped playing football. Yes, if the question is whether he will wear Argentina’s No. 10 again. That is the publicly confirmed line as of 31 August 2026.
