Apple has officially entered the foldable era. On September 9, 2026, the company introduced the iPhone Duo at its annual product event in Cupertino, marking the most significant redesign of the iPhone in nearly two decades.
The device folds like a book. Closed, it is roughly the size of a passport with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Opened, it becomes the thinnest iPhone ever made and reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest ever on an iPhone. Apple says that inner screen is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display and 80 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales cleanly when you open or close the phone. The inner panel uses a nano-texture finish to cut glare and sits on a titanium plate. Apple rates the phone IP68 and uses Ceramic Shield 2 on the front glass plus a precision hinge made of more than 100 components.
New CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook last week, framed the product as more than two screens joined together. “Others have created foldables that just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together,” he said. The Duo, he added, “will redesign the experience of using a foldable phone.”
The phone is powered by the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro models, paired with a custom vapor chamber and a dual-battery system. Apple cites up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. Authentication uses Touch ID in the side button. Apple Watch unlocking is also supported.

The rear system is a 48MP Dual Fusion setup: a 48MP main camera with an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto mode, plus a 48MP ultrawide. Fold-specific tools include Duo Preview on the cover screen, Smart Take, and hands-free FaceTime on the inner display. Apple Pencil support for both screens is planned later this year.
iOS 27 is reworked for the form factor, with side-by-side apps and new poses such as a tabletop stand. The Duo comes in Star White and Night Sky, starts at $1,999 for 256GB, and scales to 2TB. Pre-orders open October 16. Availability begins October 23.

This is Apple’s first foldable after years of industry experimentation that still accounts for only a small share of global smartphone shipments. The company is betting that hardware, software, and durability landing together will change that.
