Aaron Rodgers Breaks His Silence on Shailene Woodley and Danica Patrick

Aaron Rodgers has spent years letting other people tell the story of his personal life. This week he decided to tell it himself.

On the September 10 episode of Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback addressed his past relationships with actress Shailene Woodley and former racing driver Danica Patrick. The comments immediately reignited a conversation that had been quiet for years. Rodgers is in what he has described as his final NFL season. He is also married. That context matters. So do the competing accounts already on the record.

The Interview That Changed the Narrative

Rodgers appeared in a two-part conversation with his Steelers teammate Cam Heyward. Part 2, released September 10, 2026, is where he addressed former partners directly. He argued that public stories about him as a partner have been incomplete or inaccurate, and that those stories persist because his name still generates attention.

Rodgers is 42. He is playing for Pittsburgh after earlier chapters with the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets. In 2025 he married Brittani, a private partner he first met in 2017. He has credited her with helping him reconnect with family after a long estrangement. That present-tense life is the backdrop for why he says he is now willing to talk about the past.

Two High-Profile Relationships, Two Conflicting Records

Rodgers dated Danica Patrick from early 2018 until July 2020. They met years earlier and went public after the 2018 ESPYs. Patrick had recently retired from full-time racing. In the new interview, Rodgers said she was depressed and “not fun to be around,” that the relationship had “zero intimacy,” and that he declined to buy a Malibu house together. He said they tried couples therapy. He also rejected Patrick’s later description of the split.

In May 2025, Patrick told The Sage Steele Show that the relationship was emotionally abusive, that it “wore me down to nothing,” and that Rodgers “leaves a trail of blood.” She said the 2020 breakup felt sudden and upended her entire life. Rodgers called that account false and asked why she was still talking about him years later.

The Woodley chapter followed quickly. The pair began dating in 2020 during the pandemic. Rodgers says he proposed in December 2020 and that she said yes. They publicly confirmed the engagement in February 2021, when Rodgers announced it while accepting NFL MVP honors. The engagement ended publicly in early 2022.

Rodgers now claims the relationship was already over long before that announcement. He said Woodley took off the ring by March after the proposal, that reconciliation attempts in 2021 failed, and that she told him she did not want to be with him. He also alleged that days after accepting the proposal she told him she needed to be with another man before they married. He used that claim to dispute later suggestions that he abandoned her and caused her depression.

Woodley has not issued a public response to the September 2026 remarks as of this writing. She has spoken about that period before. In a 2024 interview with Outside, she said she had not shared much about the relationship because it always made her cry. She described a “toxic situation,” said she felt she lost her soul, her happiness, and her joy, and that she came to understand depression and anxiety. She also said the relationship “was not right. But it was beautiful.”

Those are the two documented public records. One is Rodgers speaking in 2026. The other is what Patrick and Woodley have said in earlier interviews. Neither side’s private messages, counseling notes, or contemporaneous communications have been released. That gap is important. Claims about what was said in a living room in 2020 or 2021 cannot be independently verified from the outside.

Why This Landed Now

Timing explains the heat. Rodgers is closing an NFL career that made him one of the most scrutinized athletes of his generation. Woodley recently won her first Emmy, for guest work in Hulu’s Paradise. Patrick has continued a public life after racing, including media work and a current relationship she has shown on social media without naming her partner.

Rodgers framed his comments as a correction, not a reunion tour. He said he dated two women “who nobody gives a [expletive] about unless they drop my name.” That line will strike some readers as cruel and others as an athlete finally answering years of one-sided coverage. Both reactions are already visible in the comments under the podcast clips.

The useful question is not who “won” the interview. It is how much of a private relationship the public is entitled to treat as settled fact. Engagement announcements, red carpets, and later interviews create a timeline. They do not create a complete record of what two people said to each other when the cameras were off.

If you have followed this story since the Packers years, say so below. If you think athletes should stay silent about exes, say that too. The comment section is where this article actually finishes.
